Redline is the correct answer. Redline is unquestionably the best animation I've ever seen, and if you disagree it's almost certainly because you haven't seen it. As far as TV shows go, I'd say violet evergarden for best traditional, demon slayer for best mixed, and houseki no kuni for best cgi. Vivy and AoT are nuts.

Everything after Violet met the Evergarden family is anime original. Violet's first day at the post office is completely anime original. The only thing that was 100% the same as the light novels were the flashbacks that Violet had in regards to the war and Gilbert. Everything else were edited or weren't in the original novels at all.

Well, Your Lie in April is probably more emotional on the whole, with the most build-up towards particular tragedy and which generally had me more emotional. But Violet Evergarden had higher high points, with episode 10 in particular being the cream of the crop when it comes to great, emotionally affecting melodrama episodes. In the side story movie they say that it has been 4 years since Violet joined them. So we don't know her exact age but she is atleast 18 and maybe even 19-20. Gilbert was 29 at the end of the war so he is probably 33 right now. There is a 13-15 age difference which is big but both of them are adults.

I will forever maintain that bringing Gilbert back is the single largest flaw in the Violet Evergarden story. The series was absolutely perfect and the movie damaged or at least tarnished the concluding act of the series. Violet getting to meet Gilbert is the equivalent of Ann's mother receiving a miracle treatment at the last minute. .
